Search stopped being ten blue links. A growing share of commercial questions now get answered inside an AI summary, and the brands quoted in that answer collect the trust that used to belong to position one. Getting cited is a different discipline from ranking, and it is learnable.
Why citation is not the same as ranking
A ranking system orders documents. A generative system assembles an answer, then attributes the parts of it to sources it considers reliable. Those are different jobs. A page can rank fourth and be cited first, because what the model needs is a clean, checkable statement of fact that it can lift without risk.
In practice this means three things change. The unit of value moves from the page to the passage. The winner is the source that states the answer most plainly, not the one with the most words. And corroboration elsewhere on the web matters more than it ever did for classic SEO.
Answer first, argument second
Most marketing content buries its answer under three paragraphs of context. That structure was built for a reader who scrolls. It is exactly wrong for a machine that extracts.
Open every page with a direct answer to the question in the headline, in two or three sentences, using the words a customer would use. Then argue it. You lose nothing with human readers, who skim anyway, and you give the model a passage it can quote without editing.
Make the facts machine-checkable
Structured data is the difference between a machine guessing what you do and a machine knowing it. Mark up the organisation, the services you sell, the questions you answer and the people who write for you, and connect them to each other rather than leaving them as separate islands.
- One connected graph, not disconnected blocks. An AI system resolves “this service belongs to this company” from the links between nodes.
- Only what is visible. Marking up an FAQ that is not on the page is a spam signal in classic search and a trust problem in AI search.
- A real author with a job title and a profile that exists elsewhere. Anonymous content is cheap to generate and is treated accordingly.
Be corroborated somewhere else
Models weight claims that appear in more than one place. A number on your own site is a claim. The same number in a case study, a client’s press release and a podcast transcript is a fact. Distribution is no longer only a traffic channel, it is an accuracy signal.
Measure the thing you actually want
Impressions and rankings will describe less of your performance every quarter. Track branded search volume, direct traffic after an AI answer, assisted conversions and the share of your category’s questions where you appear at all. Those numbers move before the revenue does.
None of this replaces technical SEO. Fast, crawlable, server-rendered pages are still the price of entry. It changes what you do once you are in the room.
